SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz spoketo KENS 5 for the first timeabout two K-9s who died last week after spending the night inside a deputy's hot cruiser.

The two dogs were found dead on July 27. The sheriff's office said in a statement that they were inadvertently left inside a deputy's cruiser and died from apparent heat exposure.

Anytime something like this happens we do a thorough review, Ortiz said. The incident is under investigation right now as we speak. But we're going to finish it as soon as possible.

The sheriff made the comments Tuesday night fromhis watch party for the runoff election,shortlyafter securing the Democratic bid for a re-election campaign.

Deputy Steve Benoy, the deputy responsible for the dogs, was placed on administrative leave.
