CRYSTAL BEACH, Texas Deputies investigating the case of a beach-going 3-year-old killed by a rolling log were unable to determine how the heavy piece of driftwood reached the sand dune, authorities said Friday.

LaShaun Rae Lovejoy Huff, 3, his teenage aunt Heather Marsh and grandfather Robert Marsh were walking along the sand about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at Monkhouse Road on Crystal Beach when the log shifted, rolled about 4 feet and trapped them

The log was 39 feet long, 3 feet in diameter and weighed hundreds of pounds.

Huff was pronounced dead at the scene, and Marsh was taken to the hospital for injuries that weren t life threatening.

Huff died of accidental mechanical asphyxia, the medical examiner ruled. The family recently moved from Graham to Winnie, and it was Huff s first trip to the beach, Mark Midani, the family s attorney, said.

Deputies launched an investigation to attempt to learn whether the tide or heavy machinery, such as the county s beach-cleaning crew, put the log onto the dune.

Deputies conducted 21 interviews with passers-by at the scene, responding officers, paramedics, Huff s family and with the county s Road Department responsible for maintaining beaches, Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo, a spokesman for the Galveston County Sheriff s Office, said in a statement released Friday.
