A tsunami warning was issued Saturday after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the surrounding area but emphasized that it was not known whether a tsunami was generated.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was 62 miles south-southeast of the island of Kirakira.
