BAYTOWN, Texas -- A police officer fatally shot a suspect armed with a shotgun outside a Baytown hotel, officials said early Monday.
Lt. Eric Freed with the Baytown Police Department said officers were called to Bays Inn in the 2300 block of Decker. A customer said the suspect pointed a shotgun at him after trying to break into his car.
Officers entered the hotel to look for the suspect, and they found him climbing out of a hotel room window with a shotgun. Baytown police said they gave him commands to drop the gun as he fled.
An officer in the parking lot saw the suspect and again gave him commands to drop the shotgun. The suspect allegedly did not comply and was shot by the officer.
The suspect died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Baytown police said three other men were detained in the parking lot for questioning. They have not been charged at this time. Police said it wasn't clear why the men, who were guests in the hotel, were looking over vehicles in the parking lot.
We don't know what their intent was exactly, said Assit. Chief Roger Clifford. We know that we have video from a camera here at the facility -- that they were going from vehicle to vehicle. I don't know if they were just burglarizing or if they were just looking for something to steal. That's all part of the investigation.
Police said burglary tools and narcotics were found in the men's hotel room.
The shooting is under investigation by the Baytown Police Department and the Harris County District Attorney s Office.
