HOUSTON A Dulles Middle School student died Sundayat Texas Children s Hospital and his family believes the school did not take potentially life-saving steps after the boy collapsed in gym class.

Dustin Chan, 12, collapsed while doing push-upson Jan. 13. He was flown by Lifeflightto Texas Children s and died Sunday, Jan. 26. The boy s family saidapparently he had a heart condition that no one knew about.

His family also said in the precious moments after the collapse, the school nurse, or other medically trained school staff should have used CPR or the school s defibrillator, an AED, on Dustin.

The Fort Bend ISD superintendent saidthe school nurse determined Dustin was breathing and had a pulse, and under those conditions, CPR and defibrillation are not the proper response.

According to all of (the school nurse s) training there was not an occasion to use either of those things because the young man s heart was beating and he was breathing, said Superintendent Charles Dupre.

Dustin s mother Sheila Chan said, however, that the school principal told her it was clear Dustin was not breathing.

He saw Dustin take two deep breaths and his lips turned blue, Chan said. I need to have an answer. Somebody give me an answer, she said while weeping.

Chan said Dustin was her hope and future because he was such an intelligent and caring child. He is the youngest of two children. His 20-year-old sister is severally disabled.

The superintendent said he plans to reach out to the Chan family once they have completed the heartbreaking task of burying their son.

Dulles Middle School officials said it will excuse all students who want to attend Dustin s funeral Thursday at 9 a.m. at Winford Funeral Home located at 8514 Tybor in southwest Houston.

The parent of one of Dustin s classmates has set up a Facebook page asking for prayers and donations to help the family with funeral costs.
