HOUSTON For the most part, people feel safe on The Heights Hike and Bike Trail. However, on Wednesday night, Charles Achord was not feeling so safe.

Just before 10 p.m., he and two other cyclists were pedaling together fast. They first passed beneath the Hogan Street Bridge.

Then the cyclists next came upon a railroad trestle, which is when the trouble started.

At first I thought it was fireworks or somebody popping off a firecracker, Achord said. And I heard a pop, pop, pop, pop, very rapid sounding.

Achord believes he saw two tall and lanky men shooting what looked like a rifle, possibly a pellet gun or an Airsoft.

Instead of stopping, his group kept peddling. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

However, Achord worries that the next target may not be so lucky, and he hopes his experience will warn others.

Had I made the decision, and was alone, I wouldn t have come down this trail at night, he said. It s a very long, exposed dark area.

Achord said he will report what happened to police.
