HARRIS COUNTY Despite common perceptions that pit bulls are aggressive and violent, experts committed to saving theanimals said the breed is just misunderstood.

According to volunteers with Guardian Pit Bull Rescue based in The Woodlands, pit bulls are just like any other dog.

The rescue group is trying to educate the public and alter what they call drastic misconceptions.

They re very good with kids, said volunteer Dylan Harris, who cares for several pit bulls. Licking would be the biggest problem that I have with my herd.

Experts said about 90 percent of pit bulls that turn up in shelters in the Houston area each year are put to sleep.

According to KHOU 11 News legal expert, even if a pit bull owner follows all the laws, they could still be held responsible for their dog s actions through the civil courts.
