HOUSTON-- The children of a Pearland couple killed on Thanksgiving when 140 to 150 vehicles collided on Interstate 10 between Houston and Beaumont described incredible grief Friday.

My parents were wonderful loving people. All you who knew them knew that. They will be sorely missed, sorely missed, V.J. Leggio said tearfully.

Vincent, Jr. worked with his dad at their electric company, Vinco Electric in Pearland. He said the family was extremely close. So close that Thursday was the first time ever that his parents decided to take a road trip just the two of them instead of spending Thanksgiving with the family.

Vincent and Debbie Leggio got caught in a horrible chain-reaction accident on I-10 east near Winnie that was apparently caused by fog so thick, authorities said, it was like trying to drive through white gauze. Now V.J. as his parents called him is struggling to grasp this tragedy for himself and explain it to his children.

I told my children. My oldest son Vincent took it hard. All we can do is get through this, he said.

His brother Richard said he got a call from his sister-in-law about the tragedy.

I had just watched the Texans game actually and I went and had Thanksgiving lunch at a hotel and heard on the way home, driving home, he said.

At the scene it was hard to even see the white SUV Vincent and Debbie Leggio were in. DPS officials said the fog that is being blamed was only over that stretch of I-10 for about 30 minutes. Early last year there was a similar smash up on that same stretch of roadway.

The Leggios were the only fatalities. Two other people were injured so severely that they had to be transferred by air to Ben Taub from a Beaumont area hospital.
