KELLER -- An alleged shoplifting suspect was shot multiple times and killed in an officer-involved shooting in a Kohl's store Thursday in the 2100 block of South Main Street.

Police say they received a call at 4 p.m. from the Kohl's loss and prevention department saying they had detained a shoplifter. When Officer Johnathan Hicks arrived and began leading the suspect to his squad car, a struggle began.

According to Keller Police Chief Mark Hafner, the suspect threatened Hicks and lunged for the ten-year veteran officer's gun. Hicks drew his weapon and shot the suspect multiple times. The suspect was unarmed.

In all, Hicks fired four times, but the chief said the autopsy will determine how many times the suspect was shot.

The suspect was transported to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth by CareFlite and died there later Thursday. His identity has not been released.

As the shooting occurred, many people ran out the back door of the Kohl's to a CC Carpet store managed by Bob Hernandez.

My door just flew open, I saw a lady and a small child run in just hysterical - the girl was crying, Hernandez said. They said they heard shots in the store, heard someone say, 'Get down!' and they just ran.

Hicks was only treated for minor injuries, but was shaken, according to Hafner.

The investigation is ongoing.
