HOUSTON A Houston man is accused of beating his girlfriend s 5-year-old son so severely, the child was left comatose, according to the Houston Police Department.

Robert Bertrand Lewis Jr., 35, is charged with felony injury to a child.

The boy s mother left him alone with Lewis around 7:30 a.m. on October 12 while she went to traffic court, according to investigators.

Lewis sent her a text message around 11:30 a.m. saying he and the boy were dancing and playing Xbox, but when she got home just a little over an hour later, her little boy was unresponsive in bed.

The mother called 911 and the child was LifeFlighted to Texas Children s Hospital.

Doctors determined the 5-year-old suffered blunt force trauma to the head, causing his brain to swell and bleed, in addition to a ruptured pancreas and other injuries.

Police were called to investigate.

The mother said Lewis babysat her son several days that week and the child received multiple injuries while in his care, but Lewis always had an explanation.

Lewis told investigators the boy had flu-like symptoms on October 10 and, the very next day, he tripped and hit his lip on a cabinet while the two of them were playing and dancing.

Doctors said the child s severe injuries were not consistent with Lewis explanations.

The mother told investigators she remembered her son telling her on October 10 that Lewis punched him in the nose, but the child later recanted and said another child at school hit him.

Investigators also obtained the 911 call the mother made, which recorded parts of her conversation with Lewis.

The mother could be heard telling Lewis, You re lying, according to court documents.

Do you understand what is going on right now? (Expletive) this little (expletive), Lewis responded, allegedly referring to her son.

The mother then said, Oh my God, you are making yourself look so guilty.

Police felt they had enough evidence to charge Lewis.

His bail was set at $30,000.
