GALVESTON What s black and white and pecks at our reporter? Why, a penguin of course! The first chinstrap penguin chick ever hatched at Moody Gardens made its debut Monday, surrounded by a family of penguins who took little pecks at 11 News Lisa Chavarria.

The newborn can be viewed by the public for at least a week as it as it cuddles under its parents, but will be moved to a safe area before it learns to walk. A senior biologist said the move is necessary to ensure the chick, which will be unable to swim, does not fall into the water.

Moody Gardens will bring the chick back out after a month when it s safer.

Biologist will conduct a blood test to determine if the penguin is male or female.
