HEMPSTEAD, Texas The Hempstead ISD principal who allegedly told students not to speak Spanish in class is fighting to keep her job.

The school board recently voted not to renew Amy Lacey s contract. She s been on leave since December after students claimed she announced over the intercom that Spanish was no longer allowed to be spoken in class.

Lacey s attorney said, There was no ban. There were no consequences for speaking Spanish in class.

He also pointed out that the state s standardized tests are in English.

Lacey is requesting a hearing in front of the board, and is not ruling out the possibility of a lawsuit.
