INDIANAPOLIS - They say things happen for a reason.
If that s true, then Baylor offensive lineman Cyril Richardson is living proof.
It s crazy just how my life ended up being here, Richardson said.
Here, meaning the NFL Combine, a far cry from where he was nine years ago.
God has a plan for all of us, Richardson said.
Cyril is from New Orleans and back in 2005, he had to evacuate because of Hurricane Katrina. The storm destroyed his house and the thought of returning to his hometown was taken away as well.
A pipe burst and there was a lot of flooding, Richardson said. There was a hole in our roof something must have fallen through. FEMA did the best they could to cover it up just so nothing got into the house.
He and the family moved to Baton Rouge and then decided to come to Texas locating in the Fort Worth area. Because he had attended so many schools, Cyril only played in a handful of games his junior year in high school.
In fact, Baylor was the only university to offer a scholarship.
You know, it s hard to explain, Richardson said. You see it as a blessing that you re here, but you also look back and see what had to happen for you to get this blessing.
Given all that he s gone through, it s amazing Richardson was able to play football in college and he credits Baylor for giving him the confidence to be able to compete with the best in the country.
You know, it s all about believing you re a top tier player, Richardson said. We don t do easy things at Baylor.
This past year, Richardson was named a unanimous first team All-American and is projected to go high in May s NFL draft. He s even met with the Saints so maybe, he ll finally get the chance to go back home.
All the sacrifices and all the loss you have to take and I guess that s just how life works sometimes and that s how some people s plans are written out.
