HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Joggers at a popular west Harris County park are extra leery of their surroundings after a sexual assault and robbery in broad daylight.
Houston police got a call from the victim on Friday morning.
The woman said she had been followed into the bathroom at Terry Hershey Park. She had stopped in the restroom on Eldridge Parkway between Memorial Drive and Enclave Parkway around 8:20 a.m.
It s horrible. I was out this morning, and I didn t know what was going on. I saw the tape and didn t know if it was a murder, said jogger Gerard Bessix.
According to police, both men, between the ages of 18 and 20, were armed with pistols.
The victim told police that the criminals sexually assaulted her in the bathroom and then stole her jewelry.
A public toilet like that is a beacon for any crazed sex manic, said Helena, a neighbor whose home faces the park. There s always going to be some nutcases.
The neighborhood association alerted nearby residents through an email.
It urges people to not jog alone and to carry a cell phone at all times.
Joggers who use the trails daily describe it as a safe place frequented by many both day and night.
We walk around here almost 10 years. We never heard that kind of thing, said neighbor Jay Yoo.
The victim reportedly called Houston Police when she got home. Harris County Precinct 5 Constables also joined in on the investigation.
Houston police told KHOU that Harris County Sherriff s Office is now taking the lead because the park is in its jurisdiction.
