HOUSTON A thief accused of trying to steal from an elderly man Thursday was arrested after initially escaping, police said.

The 87-year-old man can barely get around because he s wheelchair bound.

I don t open the door to anybody, said Travis, who didn t want to use his full name.

Travis was babysitting his 5-year-old granddaughter and his son also took the day off from work. The son went to throw the trash out in front of their Preakness Way home when he saw someone in their garage.

What you doing. Who are you? I say, What you doing? I didn t know what was going on, he said, You don t want me to cut your grass? And he started walking out, said Thomas, the son.

Thomas said the 22-year-old was trying to steal landscaping gear, but ran off empty handed.

I ran out the garage with my gun, tried to detain him, said Thomas.

Thomas chased the man out of their South Meadow subdivision and soon had help.

I was following him barefooted, it just so happens the neighborhood security came right at the time, said Gerald Montrel, with Citywide Patrol.

The neighborhood patrol officer saw the thief running and caught up to him inside of a vacant building.

He was sitting on the ground and I told him to lay on his stomach, I grabbed his hands and handcuffed him, said Montrel.

He detained the man in his patrol car for 10 minutes until HPD officers took over.

It s always exciting to catch a criminal, said Montrel with a laugh.

Jesus Luis Hernandez is facing felony charges. Police are trying to figure out if Hernandez is responsible for other crimes in the area.
