AUSTIN The Foster High School softball team saw their wonderful season come to an end on Friday afternoon as they fell in extra innings to Lucas Lovejoy, 10-5, in the 4A state semifinals.

The Falcons finished their season with a 31-5 record.

We just fought hard, you couldn t ask for a better effort from a team, said head coach Christie Rees.

Foster trailed 3-2 in the 7th innings when pitcher Kristen Clark stepped up to the plate and hit a game-tying home run to send the game into extra innings.

In the 8th, Lovejoy scored two in the top half of the inning to take a 5-3 lead, but Foster would answer right back in their half of the inning. With two outs, freshman Kelbi Fortenberry hit a two out, 2-run game tying home run to send the game into the ninth.

We showed a lot of character there, we always played well with our backs against the wall, said Rees. We did that again today.

The game would go into the 12th inning and that s when Lovejoy pulled away for good. The Leopards scored 5 times off Clark, who was taken out of the game in the inning after throwing 200+ pitches.

Foster couldn t rally for a third time in the bottom half of the inning and the game ended with Lovejoy winning 10-5.

We ve done this all season, unfortunately we always wait until the last second, said Clark. We had them in position for awhile, but in the end they just stepped it up. Lucas Lovejoy will face Buda Hays in the state final on Saturday.
