AUSTIN - Cassie McClure drove in 5 runs as Kingwood topped defending champion Deer Park 9-3 in the 5A state softball semifinal in Austin on Friday.

McClure, who was the winning pitcher, tossed 7 innings giving up one earned run on 6 hits.

Deer Park was looking to become the first team in school history, in any sport, to win back to back titles since the mid 50 s.

The Lady Deer actually jumped out in front to a 3-0 lead through 2 and half innings. Third baseman Rhonda Jarvis drove in two runs for Deer Park.

From that point on, it was all Kingwood. The Mustangs scored 9 unanswered including 4 in the bottom of the 3rd inning which was capped off by a three run homer by McClure.

Kingwood (35-3) will advance to play the winner of San Benito and Lewisville in the title game on Saturday.
