HOUSTON Former Houston Texans defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina has re-joined the organization as assistant defensive line coach and Russell Joyner has been promoted to director of football information systems, it was announced today.
Zgonina, who played 17 years in the NFL for seven different teams, will be entering his first season as an NFL coach in 2013. The former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year will be reunited with assistant head coach/defensive line Bill Kollar, who was his position coach at Purdue University in 1989, and with the Atlanta Falcons (1996), St. Louis Rams (2001-02) and Texans (2009).
Drafted by Pittsburgh in the seventh round of the 1993 NFL Draft, Zgonina played 219 games and accumulated 26 sacks and 13 fumble recoveries throughout his career. He was signed by the Texans as an unrestricted free agent in 2007 and played the last 48 games of his career with the team before retiring following the 2009 season.
Joyner joined the organization following the 2010 season as the team s football administration developer, supporting all areas of Texans football operations, including coaching, college and pro scouting, medical, video, security, operations and administration. He primarily develops and maintains football-related systems in addition to analyzing and integrating player-related information.
