HOUSTON -- A cigarette is blamed for a firethat sent a big plume of smoke into the sky above the Greenway Plaza area Thursday afternoon.
The fire was reported just before 2 p.m.in the 3700 block of Las Palmas nearPortsmouth. Some of the smoke blew over the Southwest Freeway.
It started when a worker at a construction site threw a cigarette into the grass behind the River Oaks Medical Tower, according to the Houston Fire Department.
The grass caught fire and the flames spread to a wooden fence and some large PVC pipes. The plastic in the pipes is what caused the thick black smoke that caught the attention of workers in nearby buildings and passing drivers.
Firefighters were able to tap out the blaze within 15 minutes.
No one was hurt.
