HOUSTON Observance of the Jewish Sabbath will keep the boys basketball team from a private Orthodox Jewish day school in Houston from playing in the state semifinals.

Beren Academy was scheduled to play Dallas Covenant in the Class 2A semifinals of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools playoffs. But TAPPS scheduled the Stars to play Friday night, on the Jewish Sabbath, against Dallas Covenant.

The Houston Chronicle reports Beren appealed for rescheduling, but the appeal was denied. In an email to Beren basketball coach and athletic director Chris Cole, TAPPS athletic director Edd Burleson said Beren was told playoffs were Fridays and Saturday before joining the association.

The Chronicle reports Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills will take Beren s place in the semifinal.
