HOUSTON A woman whose body was found on fire behind a southeast Houston business was in her third trimester of pregnancy, police said on Monday.
The body of 24-year-old Sherell Baldwin was found at 9500 Scranton near Easthaven around 12:00 a.m. on Friday.
Investigators said employees at Mancuso Power Sports saw the fire burning behind their building and called 911.
Houston firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze, only to discover Baldwin s body near a dead-end street. Authorities said it appeared that someone poured a flammable liquid on her body before setting it ablaze.
It s a tragedy. It s something else. I can t get used to it, said Baldwin s grandmother Mageline Kizzee. She didn t hurt nobody and didn t bother anybody. She would help you if she could. She tried to make friends with everybody black or white, green or yellow.
Police said an autopsy revealed she suffered various types of trauma. Baldwin s family says she was also seven months pregnant at the time of the murder.
That s all she wanted was a girl, so she was with a little girl, said her grandmother. I m going to miss her all the way, all the way.
According to Baldwin s grandmother, Sherrell began modeling when she was 15. She recently stopped and was enrolled at Sam Houston State University. She was majoring in criminal justice.
Police said Baldwin went to Houston to meet a friend on Wednesday. Her family lost contact shortly after that.
Investigators say they do not have a motive or any witnesses.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600.
