HOUSTON Houston police are looking for a thief who ripped off an 84-year-old man who was just trying to do a good deed.
The elderly man is regretting his decision of trying to help a stranger. The stranger walked up to his front door in the 3500 block of Adaiand asked for a glass of water, but when the elderly man went to get it, the uninvited guest walked right into his house.
I went in there to get some water out, come out here looking for him and he was in the house, said Edward Spikes.
That s when Spikes caught the man stealing his cell phone, but the retired construction worker wasn t about to let the thief take it.
I tried to stop him and then what happened? We got into a little tussle and he hit me upside the head, Spikes said.
Things could have gotten worse, but luckily, a neighbor brought his gun.
I just ran back and grabbed my 12-gauge and walked up to that maroon car and said Leave that old man alone, said Leonard Teamer.
The suspect fled the scene, but still managed to get away with the cell phone.
The suspect had been seen around the neighborhood before offering to do odd jobs and work on cars. Police said they ve heard about him before and think he may be involved in other crimes in the area.
