CONROE, Texas A family is mourning the tragic loss of an 8-year-old girl who was struck and killed Sunday while walking to the store with other children.

Authorities said Jazmin Alvarez, one of her siblings and several more children were walking to the store on FM 1314.

Byron Smith and his wife were riding in a pickup truck northbound on FM 1314 around 4:30 p.m. He said he was slowing to turn onto Bert Brown when the child suddenly darted in front of him. Smith said it happened so fast that he had no time to hit his brakes or swerve to avoid striking Jazmin.

None of the other children was hurt.

No charges were expected to be filed.

Jazmin had four other siblings. Neighbors said her father passed away last year and her mother works 12-hour days to provide for her children. The family lives in a mobile home at a trailer park just about half a mile from the accident site.
