HOUSTON A Harris County Sheriff s deputy shot a suspected vehicle thief Tuesday after a chase that started in South Houston, Houston police said.

It all began near the 200 block of Edgebrook where the plain-clothed deputy was conducting anundercover investigation with a South Houston Police Department officer.

The two officers saw the man breakinto a black Chevrolet pickup truck, police said. As they approached to investigate, the man drove off in the vehicle andthe officers pursued him in their unmarked vehicle.

The man ran several red lights in an attempt to evade the officers and eventually abandoned the vehicleand fled on foot, police said. The officers searched the area and saw the suspect in the 2100 block of Parakeet at about 2:15 p.m.

Police said he suddenly ran toward the officers vehicle with a large blunt object in his hands. Fearing for his andhis partner s lives, the Harris County Sheriff s deputy exited the vehicle and discharged his weapon, striking the man, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital.The 25-year-old was treated for a non life-threatening gunshot wound.

The Harris County Sheriff s deputy who discharged his duty weapon was not injured in theincident.


The HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney s Office are investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is customary for incidents in the city limits.
