HOUSTON Houston singer and songwriter Norma Zenteno is in very critical condition at a local hospital, according to her family.
Zenteno took a turn for the worse afterbeginningtreatment for breast cancer last week. She was hospitalized after her kidneys shut down and was put on dialysis.
Doctors advised her family to be prepared for the worst after she went into cardiac arrest early Thursday morning.
Her family said Thursday afternoon that she is in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit.
Zenteno began singing and writing songs when she was a young girl after her father gave her an electric guitar.
Her father, Roberto Zenteno, led big bands in Houston for more than 50 years before his death in 2004.
The Norma Zenteno Band, which includes her brothers Javier, Bobby and Ernie, has been a regular on the Houston music scene for decades. Their mix of jazz, latin and rock drawseclecticcrowds.
They have a regular Thursday night gig at Sambuca s in downtown Houston. The band will be performing tonight in honor of Norma, according to Jazz Houston s Facebook page.
A benefit is scheduled at SRO Sports Bar & Grill on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
