D.J. Augustin, the standout sophomore guard for the Texas Longhorns is known by basketball fans around the national now.
But when D.J. arrived on the Hightower High School campus back in ’05, that wasn’t the case at all.
"Being honest with you I had never seen him play," says basketball coach Henry Small, "I never heard of him."
Small coached D.J. and his Hightower teammates that year in the fall league. D.J. had moved to Fort Bend County after he and his family had been displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
“His whole concern was for his family, his grandparents. He said he hadn’t played basketball for a couple of months"
But once he started to play it was the Hightower coaches and players who were blown away.
"The understanding of the game he had, the average young player doesn't have it, so you know when you see it, it's something special."
Small believes Augustin's style of play has been perfect for UT.
"He's good in all areas of his game. He's poised and always under control. That's what I like about his game."
And Small says he'll definately be courtside later this week as D.J. tries to lead his Longhorns to the Final Four.
