Astros top Tigers in a wild 11-10 game
04:46 PM CST on Tuesday, March 4, 2008
The Astros sent their pitching ace Roy Oswalt to the mound with fans expecting a duel with the Tigers Nate Robinson. What happened looked more like a Saturday afternoon softball game. The Astros win 11-10 in Kissimmee, Florida
The Astros pounded out 17 hits en route to a 11-10 victory over the Tigers at Osceola County Stadium.
Catcher J.R. led the way going 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run and four RBIs on the day. The three run blast came during a six run fourth inning. Geoff Blum knocked in a couple of runs during the inning with a double.
Oswalt allowed four runs, but only one was earned. Shortstop Miguel Tejada committed two errors on the day which help the Tigers to the early lead.
"I know Pudge and Magglio (Ordonez) are first-pitch swingers and I threw some fastballs out there trying to get first-pitch outs," said Oswalt, who will be the Astros' opening day starter for the sixth straight year. "Pudge got a hold of the first one. I was trying to get first-pitch strikes and then get some work in on my other pitches."
Houston manager Cecil Cooper shrugged off Oswalt's outing. "Once we get into the regular season, his location's going to be much better and he'll be able to mix in some changeups and curveballs," Cooper said. "But for now, we're not concerned with how hard he gets hit or how much he gives up. We're just interested in getting his pitch count up."
Relief Pitcher Geoff Geary weathered a difficult ninth inning, but the Astros hung on to win only their second game during the spring.
The club travels to St. Petersburg, Fla., to play the Rays tomorrow. Right-handed pticher Runelvys Hernandez, a non-roster invitee competing for a rotation spot, will face Rays right hander Jason Hammel.
