HOUSTON – Robert McKiver scored a career-high 52 points, the third-highest total in school history, to help lead the University of Houston men’s basketball team past Southern Miss 95-67, Wednesday on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Robert "Fluff" McKiver talks about scoring 52 points

McKiver, the fourth UH player to score 50 or more points in a game, tallied the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball this season while also setting single-game marks for C-USA and Hofheinz Pavilion.

He tallied the seventh 50-plus point game in school history and the first since Elvin Hayes scored 51 against Virginia Tech on March 2, 1968. Hayes holds the UH single-game record of 62 points, scored against Valparaiso on Feb. 24, 1968. McKiver also eclipsed the Hofheinz Pavilion record off 44 points set by Indiana State’s Larry Bird on March 9, 1977 and UNLV’s Bob Florence on March 27, 1973.

McKiver was 17-for-34 from the field, knocked down seven 3-pointers and hit 11-of-12 free throws. He also added five assists and four steals.

Houston (21-6, 10-3 C-USA) earned double-digit league wins for the second-straight year and eclipsed the 20-win plateau for the 18th time in school history and only the second time since joining C-USA in 1996.

Southern Miss (15-12, 7-6 C-USA) had its three-game winning streak snapped and has not won in Houston in its last two tries dating back to 2004.

The Cougars took the lead two minutes into the game and never looked back, building a 10-point halftime advantage and leading by as many as 30 late in the second half.

Southern Miss shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) for the game but was only 5-for-15 from the three point line. Houston was 31-for-70 (.443) and 15-for-37 (.405) from behind the arc.

McKiver knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half as UH used a 22-11 run to put the game away.

Marcus Malone and Kelvin Lewis also found double figures with Malone scoring 17 and Lewis adding 11. Tafari Toney grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Craig Craft came off the bench to score 16 to lead the Golden Eagles. Andre Stephens and Jeremy Wise both scored 15 with Stephens grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.
