Before being honored for his longtime service at the school on Saturday, Lewis fell out of his wheelchair while trying to hug one of his well-wishers.
Lewis made it through the halftime ceremonies, but he was in severe pain so his son took him to the hospital.
The retired coach will have hip surgery Friday at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
One of Lewis' star players in the Phi Slama Jama days was none other than Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon.
THE METHODIST HOSPITAL
The former star Cougar and Rocket visited Lewis in the hospital this week.
Because of limited space, Mrs. Lewis asked fans not to visit at this time and in lieu of sending flowers, “they can make donations to the H Association Scholarship Fund.” The H Association is the University of Houston’s Lettermen’s Club. Donations can be sent to: H Association, P.O. Box 2008, Houston, TX 77225.
