County records literally stand in the way of proposed Dynamo stadium
06:40 PM CST on Monday, January 14, 2008
The Harris County Tax Assessor, home to 100,000 license plates and 20 million county records, is literally standing in the path of a proposed new stadium for the Houston Dynamo.
And Paul Bettencourt says that until last week, he had no idea that the building that’s home to your records now could someday be midfield in a soccer stadium.
The City of Houston signed a letter of intent to buy the land just east of 59 where the Tax Assessor warehouse sits last week.
Former City Councilmember Louis Macey owns the warehouse. He confirmed to 11 News that Bettencourt’s lease will not be renewed, and the property is being sold.
“It’s a lot of stuff to move. I was told on Thursday that I may have as little as 60 to 90 days to come up with a moving strategy,” Bettencourt said.
He’s angry, because he says the city never gave him so much as a heads up about the move.
“What really was flat disappointing was the city tells the landlord not to say anything to me and my staff that actually operates the building. And that was disappointing,” Bettencourt said.
A spokesman for Mayor Bill White said they deliberately have not discussed details of a possible land deal with tenants in the area so no one would buy the land out from under the city.
Macey said he didn’t think Bettencourt was going to renew his lease anyway, but Bettencourt said he had every intention of keeping county records there for years.
