07:39 PM CST on Friday, November 30, 2007
Texas Southern hired former Lane College coach Johnnie Cole on Friday to take over the struggling program.
Cole replaces Steve Wilson, fired Nov. 8 with two games remaining in the Tigers' 0-11 season. Wilson was 4-38 in three years at TSU.
Cole, a former quarterback and assistant coach at Texas Southern, agreed to a five-year deal with the school.
In three years at Lane, Cole went 15-16. He was coach of the year in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2006, the school's first winning season in 12 years. Lane was 8-3 in 2006 and 7-3 in 2007, the first back-to-back winning seasons in 24 years.
Among the players Cole coached Lane was receiver Jacoby Jones, who was taken in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Houston Texans.
