Arkansas admits Gillispie is a candidate for open coaching position

Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles says he is waiting to hear from the man who may be Arkansas' next basketball coach. But the school is not naming the focus of its interest.
Billy Gillispie is being wooed by Arkansas, but Texas A&M hopeful he'll stay.
Speculation has centered on Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie, who took the Aggies to the Sweet 16 this year. Arkansas fired Stan Heath on Monday, and attention immediately turned to Gillispie.
The Houston Chronicle reported on its Web site today that Gillispie will stay at Texas A&M, citing three anonymous officials close to the A&M system. The Chronicle report was later updated to say Gillispie had not officially accepted a new contract from A& M, but that regents and athletic officials were confident.
Sources to KHOU-TV are telling us A&M is offering Gillispie a deal worth $2.5 million a season for 10 years, and that he will likely sign the new contract.
Broyles says he has not talked to any coaches, but that, "the one I'm trying to get knows I want him to have the job."
Stanley Reed, chairman of the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees, confirmed today that Gillispie is a candidate. But Reed says Gillispie is not the only candidate. Reed says the university is waiting to hear back from Gillispie.
With Heath's firing, his contract must be bought out, and Arkansas' financial obligation to Nolan Richardson, who was fired in 2002, doesn't end until next year.
And the new coach will be compensated in part with money from the foundation in addition to the salary paid by the university, as has been the case with every major coach for several years.
