Monday notes from Astros Camp

The Astros continued preparations for the 2007 season today as the team completed their fifth full-squad workout this morning at the Osceola County Stadium complex in Kissimmee, Fla...the team will work out tomorrow beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will play an intrasquad game at 11:30 a.m. on the main field of the Osceola County Stadium...workouts for the club's 27 pitchers and six catchers in camp began on Friday, Feb. 16.

FROM THE SKIPPER: Quotes from today's fifth full-squad workout from Astros manager Phil Garner on how Jason Lane can win the RF job:
"He's a guy who's competitive, wants to play, and he's a grinder. He's trying to make changes; he's gained flexibility, and I think he looks good."
Garner on Chad Qualls bullpen session:
"It was very very good; he'll face hitters on Wednesday. That was the real Quall's today. It was basically his first day today."
Jeff Bagwell on his very first experiences in Spring Training:
"There are things I can remember about being with the Red Sox. Seeing (Carl Yastrzemski) around was great. It's really neat to see people like that walking around when you are starting out."
Bagwell on whether he'll be a good coach:
"I have no idea. The only thing I can do is give these kids some of my past experiences. If that means something to just one kid, then I've done my job."
INTRASQUAD GAME: The Astros will play an intrasquad game tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Osceola County Stadium main field in Kissimmee...lineups for the game will be as follows:
RHP Brad Lidge will start for one team, followed by RHP Fernando Nieve, RHP Paul Estrada, RHP Felipe Paulino, and RHP Ezequiel Astacio...this club's lineup will be: SS Adam Everett, 1B Mike Lamb, CF Hunter Pence, 3B Morgan Ensberg, RF Richard Hidalgo, 2B Brooks Conrad, LF Charlton Jimerson, C Humberto Quintero, and DH Kevin Davidson.
LHP Wandy Rodriguez will start for the other club, followed by RHP Matt Albers, RHP Dave Borkowski, RHP Chris Sampson, and LHP Mark McLemore...this team's lineup will be: CF Chris Burke, SS Mark Loretta, RF Luke Scott, 1B Jason Lane, 3B Eric Munson, LF Josh Anderson, 2B Cody Ransom, C Lou Santangelo, and DH Mike Rodriguez.
SPRING STARTERS: RHP Woody Williams will pitch the Spring Training opening game at Winter Haven on Thursday, March 1 against the Cleveland Indians...RHP Roy Oswalt will start the Spring home opener at Osceola County Stadium on Friday, March 2 in Kissimmee...RHP Jason Jennings will start for Houston on Saturday, March 3 at Disney against Atlanta...LHP Wandy Rodriguez will start on March 4 vs. Wash-ington...RHP Fernando Nieve will start for the Astros on March 5 at Jupiter against St. Louis.

GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE PLAY BEGINS THURSDAY: The Astros will travel to Winter Haven to face the Cleveland In-dians on Thursday, March 1 at 1:05 p.m. in the opening game of the 2007 Grapefruit League play...the Astros will host their first game at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee vs. the Detroit Tigers in an afternoon match-up on Friday, March 2 at 1:05 p.m...once again this season, the press box at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee has full wireless internet capabilities...Houston will play 30 Spring Training games, including 28 in Florida...the Astros will play split squad games on March 29 with one team playing at Lakeland vs. Detroit at 1:05 p.m...the other squad will travel back to the Lone Star State to play an exhibition game against the Round Rock Express at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock at 7:05 p.m...the Astros will return to Houston to play a pair of exhibition games vs. the Kansas City Royals on March 30-31...individual game tickets for Astros Spring Training gamesin Florida are on sale...tickets can be purchased in person, by mail through the Osceola County Stadium box office (home games only), by telephone at (407) 839-3900 and in person at Florida Ticketmaster outlets (home and road games), and online at www.astros.com.
