Astros' newest pitcher brings his own identity to the table
06:32 PM CST on Wednesday, December 20, 2006
The Astros’ newest pitcher met the press Wednesday.
KHOU-TV
Jason Jennings, 28, met the press Wednesday.
Jason Jennings actually grew up in Texas as a Nolan Ryan fan. So its only fitting, he comes back to the Lone Star State as an Astro.
The Astros gave up a lot for Jason Jennings, Willy Taveras, Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz. So what are they getting in return?
“I like to describe myself as a blue collar type of guy. I’m not going to be flashy. I’m not going to blow you away with anything spectacular. Just come in, work hard and get the job done,” said 28-year-old Jennings.
Tim Purpura and company see Jennings as their No. 2 starter.
He comes in as Andy Pettitte goes out, but he brings his own identity to the table.
“I’m not trying to fill anybody’s shoes because that would be impossible to do. I’m just going to come in and try to start, you know, start my own shoes. Try to be my own guy, be a good pitcher on the field,” said Jennings.
To do that, he will have to pitch better at Minute Maid Park. After three games, Jennings is 0-3 with a 10.47 ERA.
“If Morgan Ensberg would have been sick, two of those games, I would have had two Ws and two really good starts.”
