CYPRESS - Communication is key in volleyball and Cy Creek senior Payton Brown understands it all, despite being deaf.
When she was 10 days old, Payton was taken to a local hospital because of a high fever. She was tested for spinal meningitis but was administered too much of an antibiotic which caused hearing loss in both of her ears.
Her parents never introduced her to sign language, instead, she’s used hearing devices to play the sport she loves and be the high school student athlete that has made everyone proud.
This summer, she was a member of the US Deaf Olympic Volleyball team that competed in Bulgaria. It was a great learning experience, one that made Payton realize she wanted to become a speech pathologist.
KHOU 11 Sports reporter Daniel Gotera has her story.
