T.J. Yates gets some first-team reps at QB

Wednesday’s Texans practice featured a new twist. Recently re-signed backup quarterback T.J. Yates got some reps with the first-team offense in Houston’s mid-week prep for the Los Angeles Rams.

The “Ryan” referenced in the tweet is Texans QB coach Sean Ryan, and he’s the man responsible for getting the newly upturned depth chart at his position in order.

Yates has not played for Houston since 2015 and hasn’t taken a regular-season snap since Week 14 of that season. Tom Savage remains the starter, but getting Yates some reps with the newer receivers, including Will Fuller and Bruce Ellington, is a smart proactive move.
