Center Nick Martin is unquestionably the best player on the Houston Texans offensive line. The second-year pro has proven himself a quality starter, perhaps the only one along the Texans’ injury-depleted line.
Unfortunately, it appears Martin will join the exhaustive list of injured Texans. The 2016 second-round pick from Notre Dame left Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars with an ankle injury and did not return. It sounds like he might not return again in 2017.
“Yeah, that didn’t look like a good injury for Nick,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “So, we feel terrible about that. I think that’s a pretty serious injury.”
Martin missed his rookie season with a different ankle injury. Greg Mancz replaced Martin at center last year and played reasonably well, and Mancz once again slid into the pivot after Sunday’s injury. He did not fare so well as the starting right guard.
