NBA announces inaugural end-of-season awards show

The NBA announced Tuesday that the league's first-ever awards show is scheduled to take place in New York City on June 26, 2017 — just four days after the draft and eight days after the latest possible date for Game 7 the NBA Finals.

The event — which will be televised exclusively on TNT — will recognize NBA players, teams, coaches and executives for their accomplishments from the 2016-17 season, including the announcements of the NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man, Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year.

USA TODAY Sports' Jeff Zillgitt wrote about this two years ago when it was first discussed, along with a possible move of the draft.

These awards were previously announced at seperate times throughout the postseason. This will be the first time that all of the recipients are honored at the same event.
