Emotional Anthony Rizzo honors retiring David Ross at Cubs rally

CHICAGO — Cubs star first baseman Anthony Rizzo couldn’t hold back his emotions on Friday at the team’s championship rally in Grant Park after eclipsing a 108-year drought.

When speaking to a sea of fans about Cubs veteran catcher David Ross — who capped off his career Wednesday with the World Series title over the Cleveland Indians —  Rizzo got choked up and started crying.

“He taught myself personally how to become a real winner,” Rizzo started, pausing and then breaking down. “He’s like a brother to me. He taught me a lot in life, how to be a better person. I’m forever grateful for him. …He’s going out as a champion.”

Cheers from the millions of fans in Chicago ensued, and then Ross proceeded to take a selfie.

Rizzo also emotionally dedicated the ball for the final out from the World Series to the franchise’s owner, Tom Ricketts.
