HOUSTON - Houston got the good news on Tuesday that Super Bowl 51 was coming to Houston in 2017.
Everyone’s happy about that, but the award of the big game brought back into focus the biggest political football our city has seen in a long time.
What to do with the Astrodome?
It’s been condemned for years, politicians have been reticent to say tear it down because that would cost them votes. So to speed up the process of the dome’s fate, the county will hear plans for usage of the Astrodome from private developers by June 10, but the developers have to have the money to implement the plan.
It will be put to a vote and one of the options is demolition of the Astrodome. One way or the other, the Astrodome as we know it today will either be gone or serve another purpose by the time the Super Bowl rolls around.
