HOUSTON – The Houston Rockets will wear a green band on their jerseys during the game Tuesday in honor of Coach Kevin McHale’s daughter, Alexandra “Sasha” McHale, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The 23-year-old woman passed away on Saturday afternoon. Green was her favorite color.
The Rockets plan to hold a moment of silence before the game against Toronto at the Toyota Center.
McHale took a leave of absence from the team on Nov. 10 to be with his family in Minnesota, the organization said in a press release.
“I extend my deepest condolences to Kevin and Lynn for the loss of their beautiful daughter, Sasha, on Saturday afternoon,” Leslie Alexander, owner of Houston Rockets, said in a released statement on Sunday. “Kevin and Lynn are loving and dedicated parents who will need our continued support throughout this very difficult time. Our entire organization is mourning the McHale family’s loss and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”
Assistant coach Kelvin Sampson has been handling the head coaching duties in McHale’s absence.
“It should be a law of life that parents should not have to bury their children,” Sampson said in an interview Sunday at practice.
The memorial service is planned for Wednesday morning in the Minneapolis area, the Houston Chronicle reported.
