NEW YORK—Landon Donovan was among 11 players added to the initial squad of 16 by U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann for training ahead of an exhibition game against Scotland.
The Americans, who begin World Cup qualifying June 8, added Sunday defenders Clarence Goodson and Oguchi Onyewu, plus Donovan, Herculez Gomez and Jozy Altidore at forward. All have World Cup experience.
The other additions were defenders Geoff Cameron and Michael Parkhurst, midfielder Graham Zus, and forward Juan Agudelo, Terrence Boyd and Chris Wondolowski.
Donovan is Team USA’s all-time leading scorer and also has the most appearances for any U.S. player in World Cup qualifying with 35.
The team will train in Orlando until May 25, when Klinsmann will select the 23-man roster for the upcoming five matches. It will face Scotland in Jacksonville.
"We are excited now to get towards full numbers with the MLS guys and also the players from Europe who are coming in with great form," Klinsmann said. "We want them to pick up the rhythm as fast as possible and make them understand that we are taking the next couple weeks very seriously."
Among the rising players from MLS not chosen was Brek Shea of FC Dallas.
"We have watched Brek during the last few months, and given his performances and some of the other issues we felt he should be on the standby list," Klinsmann said. "He’s still a young player with a lot of talent, and also a lot to learn."
Shea was suspended for three games by MLS this week for kicking the ball at an assistant referee.
