St. Pius X to name stadium in Gary Kubiak's honor

HOUSTON – St. Pius X High School will officially name its football stadium Kubiak Stadium, in honor of 1979 graduates Gary and Rhonda Kaminski Kubiak and family, during their football game on Friday.

A private ceremony will be held for Kubiak and his wife Rhonda, also a 1979 graduate of St. Pius X, along with invited guests prior to the Panthers' game against St. Thomas High School, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

A public unveiling of the new stadium name along with the retiring of Kubiak's No. 9 jersey will take place during halftime.

"We are humbled by the honor bestowed upon us by the St. Pius X community," the Kubiaks shared in a statement when presented with the idea.

Gary Kubiak, an all-district, all-state and All-American four-year starting quarterback (1975-1978), led the St. Pius X High School football team to three consecutive state championships. He set the then-state high school passing record with 6,190 career yards.

The former Rhonda Kaminski, a once proud and spirited St. Pius X cheerleader, could always be found nearby supporting him.

In 1999, Gary became the first member of a private school to be inducted into the Texas High School Hall of Fame.

Gary and Rhonda are proud parents to three sons, Klein, Klay married to Marissa, and Klint married to Tessa.

Game tickets will be available for purchase before the game at the ticket window starting at 6 p.m. - $10 for adults and $5 for kids in kindergarten-12th grade with a school ID. Senior Night and Alumni Tailgate will also take place during the evening.
