AUSTIN - Yates was going for their 3rd title in the last 4 years on Saturday afternoon. Their opponent, Dallas Kimball, was a team the Lions defeated in 2009 for their first of back to back championships. This game, like back then, was close throughout and it came down to the very last play.

The Third Ward was out in full at the Frank Erwin Center as Yates took the floor against their 4-A rivals up I-45. It was a sloppy game early on tied at 11 after the first. In the second, Damion Dotson took over, like he usually does. Lions led 36-30 at the break.

Second half is when things got interesting. Clyde Santee, the senior who has been in red and gold for four years makes a lay-up in the third quarter, his only made shot of the game. He was 1-16 on the night.

Dotson picked him and his teammates up time after time. He finished with 23 on the night to lead Yates.

Kimball kept hanging around. Their star, Shannon Lilly Jr had 27 points, most of which came in the second half, Yates still led by 4 in the final minute.

However, a couple of turnovers and missed free throws let the Knights stay within striking distance and with under ten second left, Torrey Henry hits a three from the corner put Kimball up 76-75.

Yates had one more chance, but Dotson's shot is no good. A heartbreaking ending to a great season for Yates.

Final score 78-75.

Not the way the team wanted to end their season, but Yates and their fans do have plenty to look forward to next year. They drop down to 3A and with plenty of guys returning, the Lions should be back very soon.
