HOUSTON- The Yates Lions are loaded with talented offensive players, like Brandon Peters, who averages 20 points a game.
"His quickness and speed and jumping ability and just that athletic ability to get to balls that nobody else can get to. As far as that goes, he's as good as anybody," said Yates' Coach Greg Wise.
And Joseph Young, the son of former "phi slama jama" great Michael Young, averages 18 points a game. His improvement from where he was as a freshman to where he is now is just unbelievable. But this highly rated team is actually built around its swarming defense.
"We go like two hours everyday in practice and so that's just basically our thing," said Peters.
Joseph Young will tell you, "Defense wins games, if we play defense, we'll win every game, we'll win state."
That's a pretty bold statement, but that's just how much 2nd year head coach Greg Wise has changed the Lions' way of thinking.
Still after the game we watched Yates win, Wise wasn't exactly thrilled with his team's performance:
"Ya know our press can be 2 or 3 times better than it was today, and it usually is, so tomorrow it's not going to be a good practice. Ha ...," Coach Wise said laughingly.
Well, his players say Wise is a great father figure for them and he sure sounded like one in that last statement.
