Marathoners come from all walks of life, but the truth is there are very few if any marathoners who hail from low income families.

But that number is growing this year ...

Thanks to Dan DeLeon the principal at Chavez High School. He's lost over 100 pounds thanks to his jogging/running routine. He ran the half marathon last year:

"It felt really good"

Following their principal's example, 110 Chavez students will be running this weekend and here's the thing about DeLeon's students 78 percent of them live below the poverty level, and 75% are "at risk" students....but those stats didn't deter DeLeon

"We give e'm something to proud about they'll be proud"

DeLeon and his staff came up with sponsors to cover all of his students' costs to run on Sunday including entry fees and new shoes.

"He's here not just to be an administrator," says Chavez student Briseida Gamez. "He's here to actually mentor the kids."

"I think our pride and our school spirit will show in this marathon," adds Bryan Chacon who also is a student at Chavez.

So thanks to their principal, Chavez will have the largest high school contingent running on Sunday.
