Florida International senior tight end Jonnu Smith will miss the remainder of the 2016 season, it was announced Thursday, following an incident in which his girlfriend doused him with boiling water.
Smith's girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, who is carrying his unborn child, admitted to burning Smith in several areas of his body — on the head, neck, back, shoulder and arm — after a heated argument, according to a police report obtained by the Miami Herald.
Gaspar, five months pregnant, was charged with aggravated battery.
Smith had been one of the Panthers' best players, with 1,936 career receiving yards and 17 career touchdowns; he had 441 yards off 39 catches this season. Florida International (3-7) will miss playing in a bowl game.
Smith's college career might be over, but it's likely he could play professionally — as several NFL draft projections have him being selection or getting picked up as an undrafted free agent.
