Dynamo to play New England in Superliga final
09:13 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 30, 2008
HOUSTON -- The Houston Dynamo will face the New England Revolution for the 2008 SuperLiga championship next Tuesday in Foxborough, Massachusetts, it was announced tonight.
The Dynamo and the New England Revolution have played for the MLS Cup the past two seasons.
The Dynamo will face New England on Tuesday, August 5, at 7:00 p.m. CT., at Gillette Stadium. New England earned the right to host the final, the first international championship game for either team, by virtue of its better record in group play. The Revs beat Mexican side Atlante in tonight's semifinal match at Gillette Stadium, 1-0, thanks to a goal by Shalrie Joseph at the 30th minute of play.
The Dynamo reached the final by winning Group A with a 2-1 record and group-best goal differential, then by defeating nemesis and defending champion Pachuca 2-0 at Robertson Stadium on Tuesday behind goals from Bobby Boswell and Corey Ashe.
Houston and New England have met in the last two MLS Cup championship games, with the Dynamo prevailing on penalty kicks in 2006 and winning 2-1 last year.
The Dynamo hope to become just the third team in MLS history to win a major international tournament; only D.C. United in 1998 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2000 have done so.
The Houston Dynamo, two-time defending MLS Cup champions, are at home this Saturday, August 2 against the Columbus Crew.
