HOUSTON - Rice head coach David Bailiff will return to coach the Owls in 2017.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, a day after Bailiff and Athletic Director Joe Karlgaard met to discuss the direction of the program and changes that need to be made after two losing seasons.
“We plotted a path to the future about what I need to do to improve this program,” Bailiff said. “I’m responsible for this program. Everything begins and ends with me. I’m thrilled to come back as the head football coach at Rice.”
Bailiff and the Owls just wrapped up a disappointing 2016 season in which they went 3-9, the worst record since the 2009 season when they went 2-10.
It marks the second straight year the Owls don’t reach a bowl game after 3 straight trips.
“I’m extremely proud of our body of work but what we have to do is make it more consistent,” Bailiff said. “Even after two down years, our expectations have to remain high. You can’t losing ever be ok.”
Bailiff has a 56-69 record at Rice.
