UH plays first game at new stadium

HOUSTON -- Already nicknamed "The Cage," University of Houston Cougar fans are loving their new stadium.

"It's beautiful," said Ross Coburn. "I'm so excited."

UH needed a fresh venue.

The old stadium had been around since World War II. With a $120 million dollar price tag, TDECU Stadium seats 40,000 but is built for future expansions to hold up to 60-thousand.

"It's going to attract I think more fans," said Frank Humphrey. "Then it's going to help to recruit"

The hope is that young, aspiring players will want to take to this field. It has a spectacular downtown skyline view.

"It's gonna say to the local people, it's moved up you know," said Darlene Johnson Humphrey. "It should be in your memory when you get ready to graduate high school."

The club level is only 25 feet from the field and there's plenty of premium seats and party decks.

"We needed it so we can get the community out here," said Marisa Mata. "Obviously as you can tell, this is the biggest crowd we've ever had for any football game."
